Joey Salisbury

joeyJoey Salisbury is a neuroscientist (Ph.D., Brandeis University) and mobile developer interested in healthcare and entertainment applications for neurogaming, wearables, and VR/AR.

Joey Salisbury has worked as a neuroscientist/analytical biochemist focusing on the study of neurodegenerative disorders including developing therapeutics for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson disease. During this time, he gained extensive application development, data analysis, and machine learning experience.

Joey obtained bachelor's degrees in both Film Studies and Mathematics (Rhode Island College, 2005). He completed a Master's degree in 2008, contributing to research projects in both the dynamical systems (Gall et al. 2010) and computational drug design (Salisbury and Williams 2009Salisbury et al. 2011).

At Brandeis University, Joey completed his Ph.D. in Neuroscience working with Prof. Jeffrey N. Agar, developing novel drug development strategies for protein misfolding disorders, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. Joey also contributed extensively to developing data analysis workflows for mass spectrometry data, including comparative neuropeptidomics (Salisbury et al. 2013) and ultrahigh resolution HDX-MS (Salisbury et al. 2014). As a postdoctoral researcher at Northeastern University, Joey completed a transcriptomic and proteomic survey of the weakly electric brown ghost knifefish Apteronotus leptorhynchus, a model organism for studying neuroregeneration (Salisbury et al. 2015).

Interested in new opportunities smart phone and wearable technologies now afford in continuously collecting data about users and being able to apply that data to inform healthcare decisions, Joey expanded into mobile development. Also acknowledging the power of gaming to entertain and incentivize, Joey became a Unity developer, creating his first mobile game, Cardgazer, which utilizes NeuroSky's MindWave Mobile headset to measure brainwave states such as attention and relaxation.

Joey continues to live and work in the Boston/Cambridge area developing virtual and augmented reality applications for health and wellness.
